Christian Counseling Methods Essay

Introduction Christian counselors are doing God’s work and must use the Spiritual Gifts with which they were blessed to be able to reach their clients. While it may be difficult to always reach a client right away, when a Christian counselor can be effective and help someone understand what God desires for them, it can be a very fulfilling and satisfying experience. But the Christian counselor must know what method they plan to use with each client and figure out quickly if they need to switch methods to become more effective in reaching the client. As is the case with secular counseling, Christian Counseling has many different methods that can be used. While some of these methods are preferred by more counselors than others, they all have some similarities and some differences, including in their goals, concepts, strategies, and how to develop a counseling program within a church community. This paper will attempt to explain those similarities and differences, with the methods being compared to Lawrence Crabb, Jr.’s method that he wrote about in his 1977 book entitled Effective Christian Counseling. Part I: Goal of Christian Counseling From the very beginning of his book, Crabb tells Christian counselors that they must ask the question â€Å"What is the client ultimately asking for?† (Crabb, 1977, p. 20). Christian counselors must try to determine what a client is trying to get out of counseling. If the client is attempting just to receive happiness out of counseling, they may not have the correct mindset as they start counseling. One of the goals that clients should have is to become closer to Christ. As Crabb states, â€Å"An obsessive preoccupation with â€Å"my happiness,† however, often obscures our understanding of the biblical route to deep, abiding joy† (p. 20). Counselors must direct their clients to follow the Word of God and to follow in the path that He has set down for them. Christians are told that if seek the Lord and wind up sitting  at His right for all of eternity, this will grant us eternal happiness. To be able to realize this, Crabb tells Christians that they must strive for and obtain spiritual and psychological maturity. To obtain this, Christian counselors need to push their clients to do two things. Crabb says that Christians, to mature, they must obey God in the present moment and also strive for â€Å"long-range character growth† (p. 23). If Christians mature spiritually, it will make it easier for them to follow the path God has set down for them and their happiness, in this life as well as the next, will increase. Rogers’ Client-Centered Therapy (RCCT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) all have very similar goals. All three methods speak less about concentrating on long-term (next life) goals and focus much more on the immediate goals that a client wants in the near future. Instead of maturing spiritually and psychologically, RCCT, CBT, and REBT focus more on just corrective actions and teach that â€Å"undesirable responses can be unlearned and replaced with more desirable ones† (Andrews, 2010, p. 112). Clients are taught ways to avoid continuing the same behaviors that they may have acted on in the past instead of learning why God wants Christians to obey Him. Learning how to be more like Christ and what rewards await us in the next life is a great motivator to help Christians mature and achieve all of their goals for this life and all eternity with God. While Christian counseling may have a different overall goal than RCCT, CBT, or REBT, this does not mean that Christian counseling cannot use some of the concepts of the other methods. Using multiple methods and finding the right method to reach each client should be the overall goal of any type of counseling, be it religious or secular. If this is not the overall goal of the counselor, the client may want to consider finding another counselor who will better assist them. Part II: Basic Concepts One of Christian counseling’s most important basic concepts is getting deep into a person’s psyche and figuring out exactly what is missing from them not just mentally, but spiritually that may make them less happy than God  desires them to be. As Crabb (1977) describes, Christian counselors must figure out what kind of personal worth does a client sets in themselves, how significant do that client consider themselves in the grand scheme of God’s creation, and how secure is the client in their own skin (p. 61). Every client may have a different way of defining their own personal worth, and this is something that a Christian counselor must be able to recognize. Effective Christian counselors will be able to figure out where their client feels the safest and where the client feels like they have the most significance within God’s Kingdom. Without being able to do this, it will be very difficult for a Christian counselor to effectively reach their client and initiate change within that person’s life or actions. REBT can be very effective when used in coordination with Christian counseling. Although the founder of REBT, Albert Ellis, was originally staunchly anti-religion, â€Å"his philosophical stance toward religious beliefs has somewhat softened† (Johnson, Ridley, and Nielsen, 2000). Mr. Ellis has even stated â€Å"that even devout religious commitment may be helpful for many clients† (Johnson, et. al.). This shows that even someone who originally rejects the idea of God being helpful to those suffering in their lives can be shown the light. The basic concept of REBT began by stating that people shaped their views and actions by the culture within which they were brought up. Depending on a person’s culture, that can help determine their self-worth, their own significance within their culture, and how secure they feel within their culture because of their place in society. Christian counseling can be used to help them understand that God views everyone, no matter what skin color, age, or social class, as equal and as His children. Christian counseling may have differing concepts from RCCT, CBT, and REBT at times. All counseling concepts, however, look to assist the client in their lives. By using the methods together, the Christian counselor may be able to find that the client is more receptive to the advice that is being given to them and more apt to act on that advice. Part III: Basic Strategy The main strategy of Christian counseling is to help the client identify issues going on in the client’s life and how the client can improve their  actions to be more like Christ. Identifying issues, behaviors, mindsets surrounding actions can help to change a person’s actions when the same situation may arise in the future. As Crabb (1977) states, one of the most important strategies later in counseling is to â€Å"plan what your client will do differently now that his thinking has changed† (p. 157). The importance of identifying the poor thinking processes and figuring out how to correct those processes cannot be understated. Just because the thinking has been identified does not mean a person will act on changing it unless some sort of plan is put into place with the counselor. RCCT has what could be described as a very unorthodox strategy of helping the client. RCCT states one of the strategies is that â€Å"the therapist, in no way, should judge or evaluate the individual† (Kensit, 2000). This seems a very strange request to make of a therapist. While it is good for the client to determine the direction of each counseling session and what they feel like disclosing to their counselor, not allowing a counselor to evaluate the client seems a very dangerous strategy. The client may be more open to their counselor, but they are also not receiving any feedback, be it positive or negative, and may not be able to determine for themselves how their actions need to be corrected and how they can improve their lives. Christian counseling seems to have the more effective strategy when it comes to helping clients improve their lives and mindset for the long term. Having a counselor help identify should be more effective than just having a counselor sit and listen and not give any true feedback. Without some feedback from the counselor, the client may as well not come into counseling, as they are not truly getting much out of it. Part IV: Developing a Counseling Program in the Local Church Christian counseling is really the only method where the church is used and where programs are developed. While it was written nearly 30 years ago, Crabb (1977) states that â€Å"In the churches particularly, group work and peer counseling have spread in epidemic fashion† (p. 163). This seems to still hold true today. There are many different types of peer support groups in church, such as young married couples, men’s groups, women’s groups,  divorced groups, and many more, and they all use Christian counseling methods to support each other within the group. Having someone who is in the same or a similar situation that you may be in is helpful. While many of the people in these groups may not have any sort of true schooling in counseling methods, often times there is a moderator who will help move things along and can offer assistance to those who may need a professional to talk to in addition to their peer group. By using the Spiritual Gifts with which members of the church are equipped, peer counseling and having counseling programs within a church community can be just as effective as having individuals seek professional help. Conclusion Christian counseling would appear to get deeper into a client’s psyche than secular counseling. While RCCT, CBT, and REBT can be effective in helping someone change their actions for the short term, Christian counseling should prove to be more effective for most clients. Christian counseling looks much longer term than the other styles of counseling. Using Christian counseling in coordination with some of the other methods may assist RCCT, CBT, or REBT to be more effective and successful. Having a basis in looking towards the long term future and figuring out what God wants for His people will never be a bad method of counseling, just so long as you find a way to reach the person, use the resources around them, and are able to figure out what a client uses to determine their own value in God’s creation. Successful adaptation to change Involves risk taking which means that the inevitability of unpredictable outcomes, both positive and negative leaves many individuals lost in fear and pain. While some find contentment in familiar family and friends, others find change confronting, causing feelings of fear and insecurity, while still others seek the thrill of exploration. In spite of these varying attitudes to change, change is a concept that is essential to the continuation of life. These varying concepts of change and Its Importance are represented through structural and language techniques.In the poem ‘Loch Arid Gorge' by John Fouler, a poem that refers to the thrill and dangers of naval exploration. The feature film ‘Rush' directed by Ron Howard, conveys the fear resulting from injury and the positive change that can come from suffering. Finally, the poem ‘Enter Without So Much as Knocking' by Bruce Dade tests the reader's own understanding of the negative effects of commercialism change on human life. Whilst the positive thrill of exploration and risk taking involves new worlds and perspectives, the negative aspects when disaster strikes well outweigh the positive effects.Such journeys may include other people such as the way that Australian poet John Fouler explores the notion of change via thrill of exploration, as well as the discovery of the past. Fouler creates a relationship between himself and the responder through the use of Inclusive language within the text. This Is conveyed In â€Å"We climb along a weathered cream precipice†¦ † The use of Inclusive language takes the responder on a dangerous journey along the cliff face with the author to the setting where the poem is taking place.The Journey Fouler shares with responders pens their eyes, revealing the tragic historical past and the violent events that had taken place along the Victorian coastline. With the realization of the shipwreck of the Lock Arid ‘a centu ry ago, the true strength and persistence of nature Is revealed as It simply goes on *clicking tufts of unconcern' Like the sheep and cattle', the unusual metaphor here together with the gravestones' that ‘hump the grass' reveal Just how much has changed physically at this tourist site since that terrible night.Moreover, nature's power to provide negative unpredictable outcomes reveals the risk of sea runners in the past. Change is perceived by the reader as both, positive and negative resulting in the responders Joining Fouler as he takes them on an exploration to discover the unfamiliar secrets of history. This idea of risk taking and unpredictable outcomes is also represented in the film ‘Rush' which involves the highly dangerous sport of Formula One in sass's. The protagonists cheat death and get thrill from it which is represented in the quote, â€Å"The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel.It's a wonderful way to live. † which describes risk taki ng with positive connotations. This is reinforced by the way the director capture the protagonists crash. The use of a long shot down the straight they are sitting on the straight watching the scene take place. The heavy rain droplets running down the screen emphasis the dangers and how heroic the drivers are. When the car flips many components from the vehicle fly off in every direction illustrating how dangerous the sport was, not only for the driver and the car but for the audience who are at risk of projectiles from crashing cars.This crash hanged the Fl culture forever, it encouraged drivers never to push racing to extreme limits where conditions are likely to result in great injury or death. Both of these texts demonstrate the thrill that some find in risk taking. However, this text also demonstrates the dangers in the exploration of new situations. Since change is unpredictable, individuals often experience pain and suffering which negatively affects their lives but also has the potential to encourage personal growth and understanding as they struggle to adapt.This is explored in ‘Rush' as Howard explores both change and the positive and negative thoughts of fear which arise from injury and suffering. Suffering forces individuals to take stock of their lives ,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ While in Hospital getting my lungs vacuumed I realized there was more than Just winning, I have a wife and want to live till a long age†¦. â€Å", the use of personal first person reflection and the black humor of' getting my lungs vacuumed' makes the character, Nikkei Laud, exaggerate his feelings towards the positive aspects of life and how much he values it.The use of the flashbacks to where Laud was in hospital unconnected to all the medical equipment show the true terror all bystanders experienced. A close up shot from the doctor pushing the vacuum down his throat as well as the strong sound of sludge being sucked from his lungs, turns the responder stomach to almost feeling the smallest of pain Laud experienced during his recovery. The director included the direct and confronting image in the film to express how the positive outcomes of change only become obvious after fear of injury and suffering. Enter without so much as knocking is a poem written by Bruce Dade in order to test he reader's opinion towards change and question the inevitability of change through the broad range of language techniques used. The parody of sass advertising slogans in the quote â€Å"†¦ Like every other well-equipped smoothly-run household, his included one economy size mum, one Anthony Squires-Cholesterol-summertime Dad†¦ † Enforces the influence of consumerism on society as it manipulates people to change without them being aware of it.This is seen through the use of caesura and tone to reinforce the thoughts of shallow commercialism and its strong influence on change. The overload of commercialism is perceived as topic but is only changing the world into a dyspepsia society as it large influences the actions and products of each and every individual. This tests the reader's thoughts of change and why they have changes. Throughout all three texts composers take their responders on a Journey to demonstrate their perspectives of change.In ‘Loch Arid Gorge' and ‘Rush' the composers express factual historical events. The composers take their responders on social, cultural and personal changes and the impact on human life. Those personae quire adaptation and often risk taking behavior in order to understand themselves better. Over the years, there have been many Great Canadians. Whether they have had numerous amazing accomplishments, or only one very grave one, they are defined as a huge role in the country. Many Great Canadians have changed Canada in a good way, or have done things for the citizens. Lester B. Pearson’s efforts and accomplishments as Prime Minister helped improve Canada. He helped create Canada’s reputation as peacekeepers. When he felt Canadians needed it, he brought Universal Health Care into Canada. Lester B. Pearson also decided to get American car dealerships in Canada. â€Å"Canadians are the world’s best-known peacekeepers.†1 When a country is in need of support, Canada is there to save them. Canada has had a leading role when it comes to lending a helping hand. Not always, has Canada been the country to count on. Lester B. Pearson helped create Canada’s reputation as peacekeepers. â€Å"Canada has contributed soldiers, and sometimes civilians to every major United Nation’s peacekeeping operation.†2 Canada is very dedicated when it comes to helping other countries. Everyday citizens are willing to help out with a country in need. Canadians are not known for being peacekeepers because their government has told them to go support a country, they do it because they want too. They respect and help others who need it by volunteering their time and providing support. Sometimes without even leaving the country. Programs have been created not just by the government, but everyday citizens, where people can donate food, clothing, or money to other countries who need it most. â€Å"Lester B. Pearson was given the Nobel Peace Prize for his part in the UN’s dramatic sending of a peacekeeping force to the Middle East at the time of the Suez Crisis.†3 Even though Canada had no connections or fears for their country because of the Suez Crisis, they knew that many people and countries would have been badly effected by it. Canada wanted to stop a war from breaking out. Lester B. Pearson had a huge role during this time, working at a fast pass to try to stop it as well as supporting the countries in need. In the end, Canada’s hard work and devotion payed off. Lester B. Pearson as well as Canadian’s, strongly supported peacekeeping, which helped create and improve Canada’s reputation. There are many things Canada has that other countries do not, which makes Canada unique. One thing Canada has is Universal Health Care. Some countries do not think they need it, or they just prefer the way things are already. Lester B. Pearson brought Health Care into Canada when he felt  Canadians needed it. â€Å"Until the 1950s, Canadians got medical treatment with cold cash, private insurance, or charity.†4 Some countries still have to pay for their Health Care and other medical care. Some things regarding health can be very expensive. Before Universal Health Care in Canada, some citizens would not be able to afford medical care. Introducing Health Care in Canada helped many people out who needed it, as well as saved some people from anything seriously terrible they were not able to afford it fixed. â€Å"Lester B. Pearson’s government negotiated federal-provincial agreements and saw the legislation pass, leading to Canada-wide Medicare in 1966.†5 Lester B. Pearson worked hard to try to get Universal Health Care in Canada. He did it to help the citizens and create a better Canada as well. Being healthy is always a good thing for everyone. Some people did not approve of the idea at first, but it benefitted many citizens. When thinking about ways to help the citizens of Canada live better, healthier lives, Universal Health Care was a great way to make sure Canadians were all right and had support where they need it most. Every country wants a strong, stable economy. More new products being built expands businesses and creates new jobs, which means more money for the country and citizens. Prosperit y is the goal. To obtain that goal, countries and leaders have to think of new ways to reach it. When Canada wanted to create a better economy, Lester B. Pearson decided to get American Car dealerships into Canada, creating the Automotive Agreement (Auto Pact). â€Å"The agreement helped secure the foundations for Canadian manufacturing and industry.†6 Creating a strong foundation for the economy of Canada improved many things. It protected the country if anything bad were to happen and made it easier to repair the country back to normal. A countries look, or reputation also depends on its economy. When a country has prosperity, people from other countries will want to visit, earning more money from foreigners as well. â€Å"The Auto Pact helped strengthen the relationship between Canada and the US.†7 At the time, Canada and the US were not very close because of Cold War tensions between the two. The Auto Pact helped settled those tensions and made Canada and the US a lot closer, which strengthened their countries as well. Canada could now rely on the US, and the US could do them same with them. Lester B. Pearson’s action in creating the Auto Pact helped to build prosperity in Canada, which created a stronger, more wealthy economy. Lester B. Pearson’s efforts and  accomplishments as Prime Minister helped improve Canada. Pearson had helped create Canada’s reputation as peacekeepers. He brought Health Care to Canada. Lester B. Pearson also got American car dealerships to come to Canada. There have been many Great Canadians over the years, but Lester B. Pearson has proven to be one of the best. As a function of seeking to understand the impact that media has on stakeholders within society, the following analysis will engage the reader with some of the most prominent ways in which media impacts the way in which people think, act, and define/constrain their lives. Through an exemplification of the way in which propaganda and bias are represented throughout the media, it is the hope of this author that the reader can come to a more profound and nuanced understanding of the way in which these very real and prescient issues impact upon the way in which society interacts with the world, defines it, and seeks to understand it. Firstly, in order to understand this uniformity of approach that so many media outlets throughout the current market exhibit, it is necessary to seek to understand the way in which media control exists within the current dynamic. Whereas it is true that television media only accounts for one way in which the individual is exposed to information, is necessarily a microcosm of media proliferation and can adequately help an individual to understand the way in which power dynamics and bias are represented with regards to the information that is consumed. Ultimately, the current television media is 90% owned by six main corporations within the United States. These corporations are as follows: GE, Newscorp, Disney, Viacomm, Time Warner, and CBS. Such a level of realization helps to denote the fact that a virtually oligarchical level of control exists over television news media. Ul timately, this level of oligarchic competition was not always exhibited. Even two decades ago, a litany of different companies owned the television news media and allowed for a great level of diversity of opinion. However, due to the fact that diversification of ownership was not maximizing profitability and reach, not to mention marketing potential, the six key firms that have been denoted previously engaged upon a definitive program of buying out the competition. Yet, before the reader comes to the assumption that television media is somehow a unique entity and therefore should be understood differently than newsprint, radio, or other forms of media, the fact of the matter is that the same level of consolidation has taken place within these industries over the past several decades. For instance, if one briefly reviews radio and considers the way in which consolidation has taken place over the past few decades, Clear Channel and a handful of other powerful media moguls have defined the way in which current radio programming is presented to the listener. Although in this interview I had made a little improvement in my English, I only managed to get a C. Such poor performance resulted from the fact that despite having improved in my English, I had not achieved much on formatting the final written product. As such, I made proofreading errors which left my final paper with obvious clumsy and inappropriate wording and writing. As the saying goes, through determination and focus one can achieve much. This was evidenced by a rise from a grade C to B+. As they landed in America they were treated as goods which can be easily bought or sold. The masters made advantage of the freedom of slaves and rejected their right of living. Even the rebellions and conspiracies of the slaves have reduced the slavery to some extent, that is not all enough for the slaves to be granted freedom. Evidently for the slaves, freedom meant nothing but escapin g from the arrogance of their masters; and the only way to achieve this was to ensure some constitutional privileges. Indentured Servants An employer getting into contract with a young and unskilled laborer to work for him for a fixed period of time is called indenturing a servant. Such indentured servants are not paid any wages other than transportation, lodging, food and clothing. They usually work as helpers in farms or as house servants for 4 to 7 years. I just loved watching how he created the beautiful picture and wanted to learn how I could do it too. I took art classes in elementary and junior high school and loved being able to create pictures with pencil, oil pastels, paint, or create a vase with broken pieces of glass. Once I got to high school I took digital photography, drawing, web design, and interior design and loved it all. I knew graphic design was what I wanted to do when I looked at all the classes required for the major and couldn’t wait to take all of them and learn all that I could. The beauty of art has always attracted me and I have always loved being able to create it myself. Sometimes I kind of struggle with the whole inspiration or â€Å"what do I draw† thoughts, but with graphic design there is more of a need where a client needs a logo, or a web page, or play bill to be designed. The Etruscans The Etruscan civilisation is distinguished by its unique language and its beautiful art. The Etruscan economy was based on agriculture, trade and mineral resources. Etruscans did a lot of farming, they grew barley, millet, wheat, grapes and other fruits and they raised pigs, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens and cattle. Etruscans were famous for their art, especially in bronze and clay. Following the laid down procedures, the company decided to terminate the services of the applicant indefinitely, without pay. The condition set upon the employee was that she would be reinstated when ready to comply with the prevailing regulations. Following numerous consultations, with relevant stakeholders, the company reviewed the regulations and the perceived religious symbol became permitted within specified working areas. The applicant was reinstated into her employment, however, the pending dues, accrued during suspension were denied to the employee. Thi s prompted the filing of legal complaint against the company for discriminative treatment, and breach of article 9. The applicant cited hindrance of the freedom to manifest her religion. The employment tribunal, however, dismissed the claims for direct discrimination on the ground that, the applicant failed to raise the issues of discrimination when the regulation was introduced. The failure by the applicant to present evidence of other individuals complaining of similar discrimination became the ground for dismissal at the Employment Appeal Tribunal. The appellate body dismissed the appeal for indirect discrimination as the applicant never proved of instances where other persons professing similar religious beliefs complained of discrimination from the company’s regulations. This
