Symbols and American Identity In the poetry by Langston Hughes, ancestor for side B, the character talks about how his instructor gave an appellation to write something about himself. Hughes talks of his journey dressing and onward from Harlem to his prestigious school, which is on a mound supra Harlem. The hill is a symbolic representationic example of a roadblock between the city of Harlem and his school. Harlem being a low- course tout ensemble in both black neighborhood. The streets that he mentions he crosses on his journey to school are from upper berth class white neighborhoods. Overall, the cause exemplifies how his life is non disparate from his instructors because of the color of his skin. He shares in this poem his likes and dislikes of certain things are in most shipway alike(p) to his instructor. His like of certain music, his like of eating, being in revere and sleeping and his understanding of life are simply oecumenic things that he as a person enjoys. As Hughes get down ups deeper into the poem, his focus changes more to race rather than about him.

He explains that being black does not mean that he does not like the same things as his instructor, nor does it make him any incompatible than him as a person. He is saying that white, black, brown, yellow, are all the same and he is a part of his teacher and horror versa. In th e last stanzas of the poem, he explains how ! we are all American and we are all a part of each other, swimming though we may not want to be. He and then states that during that period of time whites had more advantages than blacks did at that time, he intelligibly says that we are all the same as a whole. The symbol in this poem is race.
